I enjoyed The Declaration, but I felt that the ending, in which a previously undisclosed loophole plays a major part, was a bit of a let-down. In The Declaration, a teenager named Surplus Anna lives peacefully, if unhappily, in Grange Hall, until a boy named Peter arrives and suggests the unthinkable - that she might actually have a right to be alive. Any children who are born are designated Surpluses, taken away from their parents, and raised in Surplus Halls (grim orphanages, where the children are taught a mix of useful skills and utter self-abasement). Before gaining access to the longevity drugs, each adult must sign a declaration stating that they will not have children. To avoid overpopulation, however, the Government has implemented The Declaration. It is set in a future world in which longevity drugs have made it possible for people to live, essentially, forever. I thought that The Declaration had a fascinating premise. Background: The Resistance is the sequel to Gemma Malley's dystopian young adult novel The Declaration ( my review).

Schoeller’s award-winning work, both as an art photographer and on assignment for National Geographic and for any number of other prestigious publications, is not hard to place into a general photographic and art-historical context. That work has now expanded into a massive and beautifully realized project dubbed “Identical: Portraits of Twins” and recently on view at ACE Gallery Beverly Hills. As part of their coverage, they published a series of large format portraits of pairs of identical twins, complex and powerful presences, taken by photographer Martin Schoeller. In January, 2012, National Geographic ran a piece called “TWINS: Alike But Not Alike,” that used the August, 2011 Twins Days Festival (held annually in Twinsburg, Ohio) as a launching pad for a discussion of the latest scientific advances in twin studies, including both nature versus nurture issues and the burgeoning developmental field of epigenetics. This is such a fun hockey series and I'm glad it's not over yet. Watching Smith and Emilia together, getting their flashbacks of that night, along with the other characters appearances I've met and loved along the way. Martin wrote Nightflyers in 1978, which puts it ahead of Ridley Scott’s Alien by a year. The ghost’s transparent eyes had no life in them, did not see. Royd, how could you? I finished the whirlwind of an ending a few hours ago. I gave it the good old "college try" and, some two months later, am exhausted, but replete. My dear mother happened randomly upon an omnibus copy of Crowley's at her workplace and decided to give it to me, entirely unaware that I was even interested in him. (I've been interested in John Crowley for a few months after hearing a glowing recommendation on this very sub for his 2017 novel, Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr. Most of all, it is the story of Smoky Barnable. It is a story about a family saga, a story about the architecture of country houses, a story about fairies and magic and resurrected emperors - but at its heart it is a story about a house, Edgewood, and the family that lives there. It is perhaps best described as “contemporary magical realism", but seems to defy all expectations of the genre with which we are familiar. Indeed, police culture is characterized by hegemonic masculinity, which appears to negatively impact both men and women. Researchers have indicated that the occupational experience of policing differs greatly among men and women. The 15,000 lines of poetic verse have been a staple of the literary canon for years and its description of the human condition is as relevant now as it was it was written. Who knew that a 3,000-year-old epic poem supposedly by a blind Greek poet would have such standing and influence on Western literature and philosophy?
